Freckles' Friends

January 2004 Events

Freckles goes to california!

Friday/Saturday, January 9-10:  Freckles took Trish
and Paul with her to meet Tony La Russa, manager of
the St. Louis Cardinals and founder of ARF (Animal
Rescue Foundation).  Freckles was the canine guest
of honor at back-to-back gala ARF fund raising events
in Walnut Creek, California.

On Friday and Saturday nights while Sammy Hagar,
Emmylou Harris, Father Guido Sarducci, Chris Isaak,
and others performed on stage, Freckles "held court"
with her many fans outside in the lobby. Here she is
with Beth Needel, director of ARF's People Connect
programs.

This trip was Freckles' first experience with sleeping
in a hotel room.  She was a bit tentative at first, but
then made herself completely at home. There might
be a new series of Freckles books, a la Eloise at the
Plaza!  Notice the difference between night one
(photo on the left) and night two (photo on the right).

While in the San Francisco area, Freckles was given a
behind-the-scenes tour of the new ARF headquarters
(one of the most impressive animal rescue and
community education facilities we've ever seen).

In addition to meeting Tony, Freckles also got plenty of
loving caresses from Tony's wife Elaine and from their
daughter.

It was a great trip and Freckles made hundreds of new
friends, including Hannah (shown below) who spent nearly
an hour on the floor of the theatre lobby petting Freckles!

Wednesday, January 21:  Paul and Freckles talked to
hundreds of kindergarten through fifth grade students at
this elementary school in the East Valley of Phoenix..
They had the neatest questions ("How did you get Freckles
to like you?")!

Welcomers Club
Wednesday, January 28:  Freckles and Paul were invited
to speak to 180 members of Sedona, Arizona's Welcomers
Club at the Poco Diablo Hilton Resort.  The dual topic of the
talk was the human/animal bond and the connection between
animal abuse and violence in society.

Thursday, January 29:  More than 750 students from pre-K
through 5th grade had a chance to meet Freckles and hear
Paul talk about the importance of being kind to animals and
about the process of writing a book.  There were six sessions
in all and Paul and Freckles were honored to be featured on
the school's bulletin board!

and here's Freckles hard at work entertaining the students!
