and met dozens of wonderful folks at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore
in Knoxville TN.  Special among them was Catherine (pictured below)
who came early and stayed, keeping Freckles company and introduc-
ing to others and helping Paul tell Freckles' story!  She is a very special
person who obviously will be a lifelong friend of all animals everywhere.

to Mission Hospital in Asheville NC to see the great kids who are there.
We met some super youngsters!

at the Read-a-Thon at Avery Creek Elementary School in Arden NC.
These kids had some of the best questions ever!

hope for horses
Saturday, September 24:  This was the Fall Hay Day fund raising event for
Hope for Horses, a local non-profit organization that rescues abandoned,
abused, and otherwise unwanted horses in Western North Carolina.
Founder Whitney Wright (a neighbor of Freckles!) invited Paul to speak
about the need for help for the animals in the Gulf Coast region following
Hurricane Katrina (and now Hurricane Rita).

Whitney and an equine vet recently drove a horse trailer to Louisiana to
help rescue horses. She did more than that. For the return trip, she filled
her trailer with dogs and cats!

One was an all-white mom cat with her six newborn kittens.  There was
another black orphan kitty. The white cat adopted it. It's not the color of
your fur that counts, it's what's in your heart!

hall fletcher elementary
Thursday, September 29:  With Trish, Freckles made her first visit of the
school year helping first graders at Hall Fletcher Elementary in Asheville
NC with their reading skills. This nationwide program has a great success
record. The kids read aloud to dogs like Freckles and they love to listen!
Freckles did this all last school year at Hall Fletcherand loved it (and so
did the kids)!
