ASPCA Awards
Since 1866, the American Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
has been committed to alleviating pain, fear, and suffering in all
animals.
The ASPCA is the oldest humane organization in America, and was
founded
by Henry Bergh, a philanthropist and diplomat who recognized the
inhumane
treatment suffered by many animals in our society.
So when the ASPCA gave
Freckles: The Mystery of the Little
White
Dog in the
Desert its Henry Bergh Children's
Book
Award, we were indeed
humbled and oh so proud (even more so, if that's possible, when we
learned
that Jane Goodall was a previous award recipient). The Henry Bergh
Award
was established "to honor books that
promote the humane ethic of compassion
and respect for all living things."
We have always wanted that to be what Freckles is all about -- helping
to instill in us all compassion
for animals and for each other.
The Final Selection Panel, we learned, consisted of professionals from animal
welfare organizations, libraries, and educational institutions
across the country
who were selected for their expertise in children's literature and animal issues.
The category in which Freckles won is "Humane Heroes" -- and
that's just the
way we feel about her. In fact, the ASPCA created
a new and special
award
and named Freckles the first ever ASPCA Humane Hero of the
Year in recognition
of her work with youngsters!

The ASPCA Henry Bergh Children’s Book Award and Freckles' Humane
Hero of the Year Award were presented
during a
reception at the 2004 Annual American Library
Association Conference
in
Orlando, Florida, in June.
Here are some pictures (courtesy of the great
folks at the ASPCA) from that memorable
event.
