Freckles' Friends

Who is Freckles?

Freckles is a special dog.  Of course, she'll tell you that all dogs are special.  And she's right!  And now she's the star of her own book, Freckles: The Mystery of the Little White Dog in the Desert.  It was written by her human guardian, Paul M. Howey.  What is Freckles' story?

Freckles was abused and then abandoned in the Arizona desert a few years ago.  Not only did she manage to survive, she also kept her six puppies alive, protecting them from all kinds of creatures—such as coyotes, hawks, rattlesnakes, and scorpions.  Freckles and her pups were eventually rescued.  Her puppies were soon adopted. Luckily, somebody (Mrs. Howey!) fell in love with the scared, bedraggled mom dog and brought her home.

Because of her special way of loving people and especially children, Freckles became a certified pet therapy dog.  She now works with youngsters, many of whom come from backgrounds similar to her own.  She's excited about her book (which received the ASPCA Henry Bergh Award for Children's Literature.)  And she's also excited because the great folks at the ASPCA named her their Humane Hero of the Year!

Humane Hero!

At the ASPCA Henry Bergh Awards tea at the American Library Association conference in Orlando, Florida, we were all delightfully surprised to learn that Freckles was picked as the first ever ASPCA Humane Hero of the Year!

Here is Freckles with Paul getting her gold medal from the ASPCA's Animal Precinct star Annemarie Lucas.  (Animal Precinct is a hit show on Animal Planet—check it out!)

Freckles did not let the honor go to her head.

And who are Freckles' Friends?

The kids that Freckles visits every week are her special friends.  So, too, are other youngsters and adults who care about animals and who do everything they can to make sure they're safe, loved, and well cared for.  (See Animals Caring about People.)

You can be one of Freckles' Friends by doing something today and every day to help a dog or cat or some other pet.  Make sure you spend time playing with your pets and caring for them.  It's an awesome responsibility that will make you feel ... well ... awesome!  Freckles wants to help you make a difference in the lives of animals and other people.

On this website, you will find lots of valuable information including how to choose an animal to adopt as a pet.  There's also lots of neat stuff about animals that do what Freckles does for a job.
