AUTHOR AVAILABLE FOR SCHOOL TALKS

North Carolina author Paul M. Howey would welcome the opportunity to visit your school and talk with your students. Using his award-winning book, Freckles: The Mystery of the Little White Dog in the Desert, as a discussion vehicle, Paul is available to talk on a number of topics according to your needs and wishes: the process of writing and publishing stories, the importance of reading, humane education, pet therapy, art, and life in the Sonoran Desert.

Paul, who wrote his first story at the age of seven, is the author of five other books and the editor of 60 more written for young readers and for adults. He enjoys volunteering for animal rescue organizations and teaching humane education classes to youngsters from toddlers to teens. A member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators and the Association of Professional Humane Educators.  Freckles was named "Humane Hero of the Year" by the ASPCA for her work with kids across the country.

Freckles, written for children 5-11 years of age, has an appeal that will touch everyone who loves animals.

It tells of a dog abandoned in the Arizona desert who not only survived but who also managed to keep alive her six puppies until they’re all rescued. Once adopted, Freckles became a pet therapy dog and now works with youngsters, many of whom come from backgrounds similar to her own.

This beautifully illustrated book imparts a subtle message about the value of caring for animals and for each other. It has an illustrated glossary of the desert animals and plants mentioned in the story plus special sections with discussion topics and other information about animals for young readers, teachers, and parents.

"Paul Howey's visit is one that will impact our students and staff for years to come. Not only is his book, Freckles, an excellent illustration of caring and compassion, but his presentation is an inspiration to writers of all ages."

W.D. Williams Elementary / Swannanoa, North Carolina

"Prior to children’s author Paul Howey visiting our school, our students and teachers read his story of Freckles. This brave little dog captured their hearts; and then Paul, with his great sense of humor and storytelling skills, captured their attention and imaginations. I recommend his program for all children and animal lovers."

Freckles loves the fan mail she receives!  Here are a couple of the great letters we've received:

Scheduling Paul and Freckles, too!

  • The ideal group size is 75-100 youngsters (larger gatherings are okay, but personal interaction is diminished).

  • These are usually 45-minute presentations and all include time for questions and answers and for everyone to meet Freckles.

  • Topics include the process of writing/publishing stories, humane education, art, and life in the Sonoran Desert.

  • Paul will donate two autographed copies of Freckles to your school's library.

  • The fee for Paul's talk is $200 for the first presentation and $50 for each additional presentation on the same day and at the same location (up to a maximum of four presentations), plus travel expenses if outside Buncombe County, North Carolina.

  • We're able to keep our fees so low because schools kindly send home a book order form about a week ahead of the presentations.  There is absolutely no pressure on kids and their parents to buy the books; rather, it is simply offered as an opportunity to do so.
